When it comes to bringing a new musical to Broadway, producers find inspiration in all sorts of places — including beloved movies.

Tina Fey premiered her musical version of the hit movie Mean Girls in April 2018.

“The greatest thing about bringing this musical to life is that our creative team didn’t say, ‘Can you just recreate the iconic film performance?’ We could never hope to,” Erika Henningsen, who played Lindsay Lohan’s character Cady Heron on stage, exclusively told Us Weekly in April 2018. “It has been really special being able to recreate these characters for a musical and in this current time period.”

Two years prior, Sara Bareilles’ version of Waitress debuted on Broadway.“I just think Waitress is comfort food. It’s got so much heart and it’s got so much humor,” Bareilles exclusively told Us in February 2019. “I know I’m biased because I’m intimately involved, but I really believe in the story of resilience and strength and vulnerability.”

‘Dirty Dancing’

Lionsgate announced in October 2024 that a new stage show based on 1983’s Dirty Dancing would hit Broadway in late 2025. The original screenwriter, Eleanor Bergstein, penned the musical’s book and was “closely involved in the creative process,” according to a press release.

“In the years after I wrote and co-produced the original film Dirty Dancing, I was grateful and astonished by the generations of audiences who responded with open hearts to the themes of honor and courage beneath the surface,” Bergstein said in her statement. “Years later, sensing our audiences wanted to ‘be there’ while the story was happening, I wrote and coproduced a stage show. Its reception all over the world exceeded my sweetest dreams. Now we’ve come full circle, and with my old friend Lonny Price by my side, I’m returning to the stage with a reimagined version. Its hope is to be equal to the new world swirling around us while revisiting more fully and precisely the story I’d wanted to tell when I wrote my first lines.”

Price, who played Neil in the film, will direct the production. A cast has not yet been confirmed.

In July 2022, The Devil Wears Prada musical debuted in Chicago with a limited run through August of that year. The show enlisted a new creative team under director Jerry Mitchell in 2023 with plans to revive the musical in London’s West End the following year. Vanessa Williams was announced in February 2024 as the new Miranda Priestly for when the England version debuts in October 2024.

'Mrs. Doubtfire'

The 1993 movie, which starred the late Robin Williams in the titular role, was transformed into a stage show in March 2020 shortly before the coronavirus pandemic hit NYC.

Much like the film, the musical sees unemployed actor Chris Hilliard dress up as a Scottish nanny in order to stay in his kids’ life after his divorce. The production featured Rob McClure as the Hillard family’s housekeeper and reopened in April 2022 after Broadway returned post-shutdown. McClure’s performance earned him a coveted 2022 Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical.

'Mr. Saturday Night'

Nominated for five 2022 Tony Awards — including Best Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical — Billy Crystal adapted his 1992 film of the same name for the stage. Despite earning eight Tony nods, Beetlejuice eventually closed in April 2020 amid the pandemic shutdown. Two years later, the production reopened at the Marquis Theatre. Smash alum Christian Borle played legendary candymaker Willy Wonka as he gave a special tour of his chocolate factory to an odd crop of children and their parents.

'Newsies'

Bale’s 1992 turn in Newsies later inspired a stage production in 2012, starring Jeremy Jordan as newsboy Jack Kelly. Much like the film, the musical followed Jack Kelly’s life as a "newsie" ahead of the Newsboys Strike of 1899. The show, which won two Tony trophies, officially closed in August 2014. Nearly three years later, the OBC (Original Broadway Cast) reunited during a touring production, which was filmed live and premiered in movie theaters in 2017.
